Four Wheel Campers has once again pushed the boundaries of innovation with the all-new, all-modular CampOut. Designed for DIY enthusiasts who want more than a topper or shell, CampOut is a potential game-changer.

Four Wheel Camper CampOut

Who hasn’t looked at their truck camper and thought, I wish I could change the dinette… or kitchen… or storage? These thoughts have led to countless modifications and even new camper purchases all in an attempt to solve a camper’s want or need. But what if you could just expand that dinette, add more storage, or install a sink and water system? What if there was a camper that could grow with you—adapting to your changing lifestyle and budget?

With CampOut, Four Wheel Campers is launching a new line of aluminum framed pop-up truck campers that can do just that. Unlike traditional models, CampOut lets you start with a simple layout and customize your camper over time. Want a minimalist setup? No problem. Need a fully-equipped adventure rig? You got it! With easy-to-install modules, it’s as intuitive as assembling an IKEA bookcase—only way more exciting.

CampOut also fills a niche between the Four Wheel Camper base models and their standard slide-ins. Before CampOut, DIY leaning Four Wheel Camper customers were forced to choose between a Project M topper with no door or floor, or a Base model that excluded many basic features found on standard Four Wheel Campers. With CampOut, you can have nearly everything available in a standard Four Wheel Camper, only you get to choose what features you want—or don’t want—and how those features are configured.

Oh, and there’s at least one Innovation of the Year nominee in this new camper. Hint: It ships straight to your door.

For a deep dive into the new CampOut series, we talked to Melanie Garrido, Product Manager for Four Wheel Campers.

This is your first time being interviewed in Truck Camper Magazine. Can you tell us how you came to work for Four Wheel Campers?

I was a Four Wheel Camper customer first. I bought my own Four Wheel in 2017. At the time, I left my long-term job in the outdoor industry and traveled in my camper for two years all over the USA. When I was traveling, I was actually thinking, how can I figure out a way to get paid to camp?

We can relate. A similar thought once led to a certain magazine starting.

It’s funny how the pursuit of adventure and a free lifestyle can lead to life decisions.

Through the weird way of the world, I met our salesman here at Four Wheel at an event. After that, Stan Kennedy posted in the Four Wheel Camper owners group that they were hiring and if you’re crazy enough to work there, to contact them. I contacted Mike and asked if I would be a good fit. And he said, “Yeah!” The very next week Dan Welty hired me.

What’s your current role at the company?

I started as a dealer rep, but it has turned into more. For a couple of years, I was also doing social media and retail sales. That involved a lot of processes, procedure assessment, and implementations. Now, I’m the first product manager for Four Wheel Campers.

I’m passionate about the industry and community. I love to help people live their best adventure dreams. I say to myself that I’m not trying to sell campers, but I’m helping to guide people into their dreams.

That’s exactly what we strive to do. What’s the CampOut all about?

CampOut is a modular camper. There are inside locations where you can pick and choose from different module options to configure your camper the way it makes sense for you.

With the CampOut, you can purchase a simple camper and buy the modules later. It can grow and evolve with you as your needs shift and change, or as your budget allows. You may start with the basic CampOut and then maybe you get a partner or a better job. You can add things slowly or all at once. The CampOut has the flexibility to meet your needs at any time.

“The CampOut has the flexibility to meet your needs at any time.”

Four Wheel Campers already has shell models and the Project M line that folks build out and customize. Why did FWC decide to build a modular camper with modules?

We’ve had our Base Model (shell) for a long time. We have found that people purchase the Base Model for different reasons. They may want it to be lightweight, have a lot of space inside, or have the dream of customizing it themselves. There are limitations to what we offer in the base model. People ask, for example, if they can get a water system. Not in the base model.

Our Project M is a blank slate. It’s open on the inside with very limited options. It’s a utilitarian-style camper. People have been so creative in adding things to the Project M and building it out. However, Project M is more susceptible to the elements and temperature fluctuations since it’s a topper.

The new CampOut meets an unmet need. Previously, if a customer wanted a fully enclosed camper with basic features, we didn’t offer a solution. They would have to get a base model or a full Four Wheel Camper. That might not be in their price range or have features they didn’t need.

The CampOut blends the security and comfort of a fully enclosed Four Wheel Camper with a door, but offers the flexibility to have just what you need. You can remove things or add things later. It’s a beautiful combination of everything you need and nothing you don’t.

That makes sense. Are you keeping the Base Model now that the CampOut is available?

For now, yes.

To be clear, CampOut is an entire series of Four Wheel Campers?

That’s a good question. It is a completely new series with its own branding and sizing convention.

Will there be CampOut versions of every current Four Wheel Camper slide-in?

There are models for mid-size trucks with 5’ beds up to full-size trucks with 8’ beds.

Are there model designations for the different CampOut models?

Yes, the naming convention is COM for mid-size trucks, and COF for full-size trucks. There are COM (mid-size) models in 5 and 6 foot floor lengths and COF (full-size) models in 5, 6 and 8 foot floor lengths.

How are the different modules installed and uninstalled?

We designed the module installation to be easy for someone to do at home. Every module purchased after the initial order comes with instructions and a hardware kit. You will need 3mm, 4mm, and 5mm hex keys, a 7/16 wrench, and blue Loctite. The module frames are slotted aluminum 80/20 extrusions. Assembly is straightforward and simple.

Once assembled, the modules are affixed to mounting points in the CampOut’s interior including tracks on the floor. Everything fits nice and snug.

If you can build an IKEA bookcase, can you build a CampOut module and install it?

Yes, absolutely.

So how do customers purchase these modules?

There are different ways to get modules. First, they could be included with your CampOut camper purchase. When you pick up your CampOut, the modules will be assembled and installed in your camper—as ordered.

Second, modules can be ordered and installed through a Four Wheel Camper dealer. This is a great hassle-free way to upgrade or change a CampOut.

Third, you can order modules on our website and have them delivered to your house. The modules come flat-packed. Again, there are instructions and a video that will explain the basics. From there you can build and install the modules yourself.

Wait, you can order modules online and install the modules at home?

Yes, our customers will have that option.

Four Wheel Campers has never shipped anything direct other than general parts, so we did test shipments. We sent flat-packed modules to a dealer in Oregon, southern California, and the east coast. We also did drop tests at the factory. It took a little time to figure out the right packaging to ensure the modules arrived in perfect condition, but we got it.

What modules come standard in the CampOut?

There are two standard modules that come with the CampOut; the Power Module and the Utility Module.

Are the two standard modules removable?

No. They’re permanently installed. There’s installed wiring behind the Power Module and, if the propane option is selected, propane connections live in the Utility Module.

Standard Utility And Power Modules In CampOut

Above: The Power and Utility modules are what comes standard with the CampOut

What’s included with the Power and Utility Module?

The Power Module comes with a single 132Ah lithium battery, interior and exterior power ports, a DC port for Starlink Mini on the outside, and shore power. The Power Module also includes DC-to-DC charging, solar controller, and shore power to charge up your batteries.

The Utility Module can be ordered with or without an externally accessible propane compartment. The propane would fuel the optional Truma VarioHeat furnace and a modular propane cooktop.

So the CampOut comes standard without propane?

Yes. There’s a movement toward no-propane campers. To meet this trend, CampOut comes without propane standard, but you can opt for it. The propane goes into the lower section of the Utility Module, and the Truma VarioHeat goes under the Power Module. You get both propane and the Truma VarioHeat as a package.

If you don’t opt for the Truma VarioHeat and propane package, the Utility Module comes standard as a large lockable exterior storage and a large interior storage cabinet.

If you order a CampOut without the propane option, can you add it later?

No. Propane is the one option you cannot add after the camper is built. Customers will need to commit to propane or no propane. There are regulations that make it hard to add later.

Do CampOuts come with any other features standard?

Yes. On the outside, CampOut models come with Molle panels and L-track on both sides of the camper, a porch light, and LED down lights. On the inside, four interior lights, a fan, and a queen size cabover bed are standard. All the module mounting points are also standard.

Is the Power Module expandable?

Yes, you can get two 132Ah lithium batteries (264Ah total) and a 2,000-watt inverter. With the inverter option, the inside and outside 110-volt plugs work. You can also add up to 500-watts of solar to keep your batteries charged.

In the photos, there’s a cooktop on top of the Utility Module. What cooktops are available with the CampOut?

We offer a portable two-burner propane cooktop and a two-burner electric induction cooktop. You can cook inside or outside on both units.

We introduced induction cooktops in our ORVIS Edition. Now it’s an option with the CampOut if you also opt for the 2,000-watt inverter. With the 110-volt plug on the outside of the unit, you could cook outside on the induction cooktop.

The Refrigerator Module (pictured above) includes a 12-volt compressor Dometic CFX refrigerator and a platform. Can I get just the platform if I already have a 12-volt compressor refrigerator?

Yes. We understood that a lot of people want flexibility, and they already have refrigerators and other equipment. You can get the fridge or just the platform. In that location, you can also get a seat cushion to add more seating.

CampOut 6 Foot PSGR Cushion

If I order the Refrigerator Platform module for seating, do I need to order the seat cushion separately?

Yes. You can also opt to have no module in that location if you need that space for luggage or some other use. We have been using the phrase, “Built Your Way”. You can pick and choose what you want. You can also change or build out the camper as your needs change.

How many different module configurations are possible?

There are forty possible configurations. We learned that during our birds-eye view photo shoot showcasing the different module configurations.

That’s incredible. Usually, top-down images like that are computer renderings. That must have been a fun and challenging experience.

Learning all the possible combinations was a fun puzzle.

What model is the optional refrigerator?

The unit in the photos is a Dometic CFX 55. In the five-foot CampOuts, we use a CFX 45 which is one size smaller to fit that floor plan. The refrigerator in the 5’ also moves to the passenger’s side next to the water module and the available seating is a bench on the driver’s side instead of a front dinette.

Four Wheel CampOut Full Sized 6 Foot Featuring Power Water Module And Seating Modules

Above: The Water Module (with the Dometic GO faucet), Power Module, and Seating Module

Speaking of the Water Module, it’s a clever water and tank system in a box. Tell us about how that works.

The Water Module features a stainless steel sink and uses the Dometic GO self-powered 12-volt faucet and four 11 liter Dometic GO water hydration jugs. The sink has a drain and p-trap and is big enough to wash hands and dishes. Three of the Dometic GO jugs supply the fresh water to the faucet and one acts as your grey tank. It’s a fully self-contained water module.

You can fill the Dometic GO jugs anywhere with fresh water. There are quick disconnects for the Dometic GO faucet, so it’s easy to transition. Eric and Sarah from our team even used the faucet and jugs outside for cooking, showering, and rising things off. It’s incredibly versatile.

Is the CampOut the first factory-built Four Wheel Camper with an interior grey tank?

Yes, it is.

For folks who want more fresh or grey capacity, can they get additional Dometic GO water containers?

Yes. They are super easy to fill and empty. It allows for more flexibility.

If someone will be going skiing or needs to winterize the unit, can the Water Module be removed?

Yes, it’s removable. It’s easy to remove for winterization or if you’re going on a trip and don’t need that particular module. There are six attachments on the top wall and then four on the floor tracks.

Could you take the Water Module out and use it outside?

It’s not really designed for that. It conforms to the wing that clears the bed rails in the camper. It has a full-length floor, but it cuts up to that wing shape.

The Water Module platform can also be used as seating. Is that the same module as the Refrigerator Module?

It has slightly different dimensions. If someone doesn’t want the Water Module, they can order the Water Module platform and a cushion, a tall storage module, or they can leave that space empty.

Four Wheel CampOut Couple In Dinette

Above: In the CampOut 6 and 8 the Seating Module is in the front, in the CampOut 5, it is on the side

Is the Seating Module technically an option?

Yes. I’m sitting in the Seating Module now. In the CampOut 6 or 8, the Seating Module is a front dinette with a Lagun table system and table top. In the CampOut 5, the Seating Module is a driver’s side bench seat and also includes the Lagun table system and table. You can extend the seating on either side in place of the Water or Refrigerator Module.

Is the cabover in a CampOut the same as a standard Four Wheel Camper?

The cabover is identical. A queen-size bed is standard, with a king-size bed as an option in the full size modules. The cabover portion is 48 inches.

The only difference with the cabover from our standard models is that you can’t get the underbed storage in the CampOut.

Four Wheel Camper CampOut With Snowboards

What kinds of things do you envision CampOut owners mounting on the exterior Molle panel and vertical L-tracks?

We’re really excited about the standard Molle panels and L-tracks. The first time we offered the L-track was on the ORVIS Edition. There are tons of accessories designed for the L-track system including various hooks and bags.

Each L-track section can hold up to 25 pounds. If you span two of them, they can carry 50 pounds. Span all three and you can carry 75 pounds.

Four Wheel Campout Molle Racks

We envision people using these mounting points for RotopaX, Maxtrax, shower cubes, awnings, and more. Eric found ways to mount his snowboard and surfboard using the L-track and Molle panel. There are endless possibilities.

Starlink Mini CampOut Four Wheel Camper

Above: All CampOut models come standard with an exterior Starlink Mini 12-volt power outlet

The 12-volt Starlink connection is so simple and so clever. Where did that idea come from?

We’ve seen tons of customers with DIY solutions to mount and power their Starlink systems. When Starlink announced that the Starlink Mini could run off 12-volt power, people gravitated to it. Putting a standard DC port for the Starlink Mini makes sense.

Can the CampOut modules be used with the Four Wheel Camper Base Models or Project M series?

I don’t think so. The modules are specifically designed for the installation points and interior shape of the CampOut units. They’re only intended for the CampOut.

Four Wheel Campers CampOut Builder

The online Builder Tool system is a fantastic idea. Does it represent every possible CampOut model, module, and configuration?

Yes. We’ve been putting extra efforts into the CampOut Builder Tool because of all the options. With all the top-down photos we took, we will eventually make it so that you can see the configuration you want as you select options. For now, there will be a full photo gallery of all possible combinations. Then a local dealer will guide you through finding the perfect truck and Four Wheel Camper setup.

Can someone go to a Four Wheel Camper dealership and see the different modules and configurations?

Yes. Almost every Four Wheel Camper dealer already has a CampOut in their showroom. Their CampOut units have all the modules.

Are all the modules made at Four Wheel Campers?

Yes. They’re all made in-house here in Woodland, California.

Does a fully-loaded CampOut have all the same features as a standard Four Wheel Camper?

There are a few features you can’t get in a CampOut that you can in a standard Four Wheel Camper. First is a water heater with an outside shower. Second, is the underbed storage. Third, is a built-in cassette toilet. The standard Four Wheel Campers also have more water capacity. Other than that you can get everything in a CampOut.

Four Wheel Campout Full Size And Mid Size Campers

Above: Four Wheel Campout full-size (left) and mid-size (right) models

What is the MSRP for the 2025 Four Wheel Camper CampOut with standard build features?

With the exception of the 8’ model, every CampOut model is $25,995. The 8’ model at $26,995.

How much are the different modules?

There are a lot of variables with the modules and their upgrades. To get a handle on the CampOut module options and other options, I recommend downloading our CampOut Spec Sheet PDF.

What are the base weights of the CampOut models?

As a rule of thumb, the standard CampOut (no options) is similar in weight to our Base models and the fully equipped CampOut is similar in weight to our standard camper weight.

The base weight of the COM5 is 860 pounds, the COM6 is 985 pounds, the COF5 is 950 pounds, the COF6 is 995 pounds, and the COF8 is 1,030 pounds.

When will the CampOut be available at dealerships?

They’re at all our dealers now. We are taking orders today. Lead times vary by dealer.

What is the warranty for the CampOut?

It’s the same for all Four Wheel Campers; a one year general warranty. There’s a five year warranty for the frame, floor pack, roof, vinyl soft wall, and aluminum siding. Components have their own warranties, and can be easily replaced.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about the Four Wheel Camper CampOut?

We’re really excited about CampOut. When people see what you can do with it, I think it will really inspire and excite our customers. For DIY enthusiasts who want more than a topper, but also want the flexibility to build out a camper their own way, the CampOut is the perfect blend.
